Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
The Amish first arrived in the United States in the early 18th century to escape persecution in Europe. As farming is at the center of their lives, they settled in rural areas of the country. Currently the highest concentrations of Amish are found in Ohio, Indiana and in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Amish lifestyle is a deliberate effort to live a simple life of faith and to separate from the modern world and maintain self-sufficiency. Amish culture forbids the use of automobiles and electricity which violates the Bible's instruction. Smoking and drinking is not allowed. Their dress code is very simple and the predominant colors are blues, black and white. Children typically attend school until the 8th grade (14 years old) and then they begin helping with farm and household chores. They have four core principle values: faith, family, community and living a modest life
