Winter Migration of nomad eagle hunters of Western Mongolia
Every year, at around the middle of February the nomad eagle hunters of Western Mongolia embark on a treacherous 3 days, 90 miles long winter migration through the breathtaking Altai Mountains in the hope of reaching better pastures for their prized livestock. At this time of the year temperatures are frigid (ranging between -30C during the daytime and -40C at night time). While in the older days the entire family made the journey on foot or on horses, today the elderly, the children and the women make this journey on a truck along with all the family's belongings including very young and older animals as well as injured ones. But the bulk of the herd, comprised of bactrian camels, goats, cows, horses and yaks, still has to make the journey on foot led by the younger men of the family.
